Google Business Profile in Valais: on the map before your competitors

2 September 2026 · 3 min

When someone in Visp searches “pizzeria near me” or someone in Zermatt types “physiotherapy”, Google shows the map with three businesses first. Whoever is in those three gets the call; whoever is on the next page, rarely. The Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is free and, for most local businesses in Valais, the most important page they own — more than the website.

What Google weighs

Three things: relevance (does your profile match the search?), distance (are you close to the person searching?) and prominence (does Google trust you: reviews, photos, activity, mentions on other sites). You don’t control distance. You control the other two.

Settings that make the difference

  • The right primary category. “Pizza restaurant”, not “Restaurant”, if pizza is what you sell; “Physiotherapist”, not “Clinic”. The primary category outweighs every other bit of text.
  • Your real business name. Don’t add “Visp” or “best pizza” to the name: Google penalises it and the profile can be suspended.
  • Exact opening hours, including holidays and low season. In Valais a wrong January opening time costs more than you’d think: the person turns up, you’re closed, they leave one star.
  • Services and products filled in. Each service with one sentence and a price when the price is fixed. That’s text Google reads.
  • Your own photos, not stock. Façade, interior, team, dish or finished job. Ten real photos beat fifty generic ones.

Reviews: the part nobody likes asking for

Most happy customers don’t leave a review on their own. Ask. A QR card at the counter, one line at the end of the invoice e-mail, a WhatsApp message two days after the job. And reply to all of them — the good ones in two lines, the bad ones calmly and with facts. The owner’s reply is read by people who haven’t decided yet.

Keeping the profile alive

A dormant profile loses positions to an active one. Post one update a month (new menu, summer hours, a finished project), add photos now and then, and check the questions and answers. Fifteen minutes a month is enough.

The most common mistakes I see in Upper Valais

  • Profile created by the previous owner or a supplier, with no access — nobody has updated it in years.
  • Address on the website different from the profile (Strasse vs. Str., swapped number). Google hesitates and loses trust.
  • Generic category and no services filled in.
  • Unanswered reviews, especially the negative ones.
  • No link between profile and website: the site shows no address or phone, and the profile points to a page that doesn’t exist.

Profile and website reinforce each other

The profile brings the call; the website closes the decision. If the profile sends people to a slow site with no prices and only one language, you lose at the final hurdle. Address, phone and hours must be exactly the same in both places — and the site needs structured data (schema.org LocalBusiness) so Google links the two effortlessly.
