A website for a hotel or mountain accommodation: direct bookings without depending on the platforms

2 September 2026 · 4 min

Most places to stay in Upper Valais are on the big booking platforms — and that makes sense: it is where many guests search. The problem starts when the hotel’s own website is worse than the platform page. At that point the guest who has already found you, already likes you and searches for you by name ends up booking through an intermediary and paying you less. A good website does not replace the platforms: it wins back the direct booking from those who have already decided.

What the guest wants to know in thirty seconds

  • Is there room on my dates, and how much is it. An availability calendar and prices by season, as text and in Swiss francs. If you use a booking engine, the “Book” button has to be visible on every page.
  • What does the room I will sleep in look like. Real photos of each room type, with the view, the bed and the bathroom. One photo per room is worth more than ten of the lobby.
  • What is included. Breakfast, parking, sauna, shuttle to the slopes, pets. As a list, not a paragraph.
  • How to get there and what to do. Distance to the station, the lift and the slopes; what there is to do in summer and in winter. That is the part the platform does not do for you.

The advantage of booking direct

Whoever books on your website has to gain something from it, and has to see it on the first page: breakfast included, a later check-out, a discount for longer stays, more flexible cancellation. It does not need to be much — it needs to be clear and true. And a “best price guaranteed” promise is only worth making if it is genuinely kept in every season.

Languages: your guests’, not your neighbour’s

A hotel in Zermatt or Saas-Fee welcomes guests from half of Europe and further. The website needs the languages of the people who actually come: German and English almost always, French for Swiss and French guests, Italian or another language depending on your clientele. Each version has to be complete on the pages that decide the booking: rooms, prices, terms and contact. The stories about the region can stay in two languages.

Photos and video: what convinces

Daylight, tidy rooms, the real view from the window. One photo of the snow at the door in January and one of the terrace in July say more than any text. Avoid stock images and heavy videos at the top of the page: on a phone, on a mountain network, they slow everything down. If you have a short video of the place, put it further down, on demand.

Linking the website to the platforms and the Google profile

The website, the Google Business Profile and the platform pages must say the same thing: name, address, phone, check-in times and categories. When the guest sees the same information everywhere, they trust it. When they see different prices or rules, they hesitate — and in tourism, hesitation is a booking lost to the hotel next door. If you use a channel manager, the website’s calendar must be the same as the platforms’, so that the same room is never sold twice.

What it costs and what changes

For most small properties, a business website of up to five pages — rooms, prices and terms, the region, contact and booking — costs CHF 4'900 and is ready in about a month. The booking engine, when one is needed, is chosen around what you already use. Maintenance, between CHF 95 and 290 a month, covers hosting, updates and the price and season changes over the year — which are frequent in a hotel.
